Sabarmati Ashram : Mahatma Gandhi


SABARMATI ASHRAM 




 Sabarmati Ashram was founded by MAHATMA GANDHI on June 17 , 1917 . The ashram was originally called as Satyagraha ashram when it was found or established initially . This ashram is located on the banks of the river Sabarmati . 


"If , on weighing the merits of this ashram against its drawbacks , it is found wanting , the world has a right and duty to say that I have lived my life in vain as I have attempted to put my whole soul into it . "Gandhi had written this in 1920s , in reply to some allegations and criticism about he Ashram. 



It is also said that Gandhi started the Dandi March in the Sabarmati Ashram . Because this ashram it located in between a prison and a cementery . The reason behind Gandhi starting this ashram is that he believed that every Sathyagrahi will end up either in prison or in graveyard , so he started this Ashram as a token of independence or thia Ashram will reawaken your sense of Independence 


Mahatma Gandhi stayed in Sabarmati for about twelve (12) years with his wife Kasturba Gandhi . The ashramites had taken vows that includes truth , non-violence , non - stealing , non -  possession , chastity , control of the palate , removal of untouchability , tolerance , manual work . Gandhiji's daily routine consisted of ; reading praying , cleaning toilets , planting trees , writing , giving speechs , spinning wheels etc., . 




The birth of Khadi and Gandhian symbol was at this Ashram .Gandhiji also wrote his autobiography at Sabarmati Ashram over a period of 658 days . When he wanted to be in touch with himself , this where he would come . 



After Gandhi left he in 1930 , the volunteers or the workers who stayed back used to carry out the reconstruction work which was started by him . Gandhi had written in a letter in 1932 "The Ashram exists in our hearts as much as it does on the bank of the Sabarmati ". After Gandhiji's death the Ashram engages in the animal husbandry ,  cow breeding , milk production , safai school . 

 Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust ; this follows three main objectives they are 

1) To preserve the physical buildings , his residence etc,. 

2) To collect and preserve his writings 

3) Communication - how modern day people know and how much they know about MAHATMA GANDHI . 


The museum has big 8 paintings and more than 250 photo enlargement of some of the most historic events of Gandhi's life . It also consists of about 34 thousands of letters to and from Gandhi .
